Who can participate?

To be eligible to participate, you must be a girl attending middle school (6th - 8th grade) in the 2013-2014 school year and must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or DC. 6th graders attending elementary school and home-schooled girls may participate. Both individuals and teams of up to 3 members will be allowed to participate but will not be judged separately.

Competition Details

The goal of this competition is to encourage participants to explore the possibility of using cutting-edge technologies to solve imminent problems. The themes for this year as follows:

1. Global Health (disease, hunger, poverty, etc)

2. A Safer World (safety-related technologies, cybersecurity, defense, etc)

3. Intelligent Technology (robotics, brain-computer interfaces, artificial intelligence applications, machine learning, etc)

The challenge is to pick one of the listed themes and come up with a creative and novel solution that involves computer science in some way. This is a very open-minded competition, so feel free to envision technologies that may seem futuristic but make sure to clearly elaborate upon the challenges or steps that would need to be taken to reach that point.

After developing and outlining your idea, please submit the following to ProjectCSGIRLS:

1. A brief (maximum of 2 pages) introduction explaining which theme you chose, why you chose it, and how important you believe this theme is to society.

2. A 1-3 page summary of your technology that clearly depicts how your proposed technology provides a solution or improvement to the chosen theme.

3. A short video (maximum of 5 minutes) introducing yourself or your team members and explaining how this project developed your interest in computer science and what you propose to do if you are selected as a finalist.

4. A 2-3 paragraph overview of why you think more girls should be involved in computer science and other technology-related fields.

All of the above information should be submitted directly on the official project submission form. Please download and type directly on the form and convert it to a pdf before uploading. The form can be downloaded here.
